Before I get into talking about wildflowers I would like to my mention that I have a new show coming up April 6th and 7th in downtown San Antonio, Texas. I will fill in the details in my next blog on March 24th.
Spring in Texas is one of my favorite times of the year in! If you like taking pictures of flowers, here are a few things to be careful of:
1.)While looking for flowers, make sure that you obey the “No Trespassing” signs. If you find a great patch of wildflowers, then try to ask permission first. It’s better than getting in trouble. If you are in a park that requires you to stay on the path then please do so. You may damage plants and flowers that need protection if you don’t.
2.)Watch out for holes or other things buried in the grass that you can’t see. Go slowly and use a stick to feel your way around. No one needs a sprained ankle from falling into a hole that can’t be seen.
3.)Look out for snakes, wild animals, and thorny plants. It’s a good idea to wear long pants and good footwear to give you some protection.
4.)Clean up after yourself. Don’t leave trash or equipment behind that will destroy the experience for someone else. (It’s common for me to lose a lens cap. Often I try to go back and find it but can’t, so now I just put it in my pocket instead of keeping it on the strap.)
5.)Go beyond normal expectations for nature! Bring a bag with you and pick up a few pieces of trash someone else left. Some places may even reward you for doing so, like “Island Joe’s Coffee and Gallery” on Padre Island. They will give you a free beverage if you pick up a bag of beach trash!
