Christmas and candles go together like chocolate and mint. I enjoy burning a candle and letting the room fill with the scent of oranges and cranberries, pumpkin spice, or whatever the scent. The scent can relax you or put you in a romantic mood. Candles during this time also remind me of advent candles at my church. Each candle represents something different. The first candle stands for hope, the second faith, the third joy, the fourth peace, and the fifth purity and light or the Christ candle. (The meaning and number of candles may vary from church to church, but it still proclaims Christ and his story.) Yet, when I leave my house, I always have to blow out the candles for safety. However, there is one light in this world that I can never blow out. In John 8:12, it says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’ ” And again in John 1:1-5, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (NIV).” Jesus is the light of the world, and that is good news. I don’t have to stumble around in the dark of the world wondering where I should go to find the truth because He lights the way. No more stumbling around in the darkness for me!
